History

The Dyffryncowin Stud of Section D Welsh Cobs was formed in 2009 with the purchase of one of our foundation mares, Seiont Erwain. Further purchases followed in 2010 and 2011 with Coednewydd Betty, Minyffordd MIssissippi Maid, Llansansior MIllie and then Llangwm Celtica in 2013. We also purchased a filly foal in 2011, Cnwch Eloise.

Set in the heart of Carmarthenshire the stud is purely a recreational project for my father, Eifion Howells and I, Matthew. The farm also hosts several Welsh Mountain (section A) ponies from the award winning Ruperra stud owned by Barbara Green, my partner.

Luck was on our side during the first couple of years providing us with fillies. The stud now has several home bred mares who are producing the second generation of cobs at the stud.

With the mares purchased coming from several different bloodlines we have not applied any particular science to a breeding programme. Choosing stallions on temperament, confirmation and 'what catches the eye' along with the kindness of certain individuals allowing us to use their stallions, is now proving its worth with some quality animals having been born with us in the last few years.

We do show some of our stock at local shows in West Wales, venturing along the M4 corridor and into Mid Wales for a few also. We also attend a couple of county shows, however with both Barbara and myself working full time we are restricted on how far we can travel to exhibit our stock. We pride ourselves on being able to breed and exhibit our own stock, especially when the hard work does result in the odd red rosette!!

I hope you will find the following pages of interest, whether you are a breeder, rider, driver, exhibitor of our wonderful breed or just a WPCS enthusiast.

A selection of the foals and youngstock are for sale every year. If you require further information then please do contact us.

If you are an owner of any of the animals we have bred and we have not met before then please get in touch.

Thank you
Matthew
